The Birth of Inter-Alia

In 1983 Paul was playing lead guitar for a 6 piece band in Pietermaritzburg when Jane auditioned as the lead singer which is how they met.  They married in 1989 and had one of the longest weddings in history that lasted for 4 days celebrating with friends, family and their dedicated followers. The band went through a series of different members and name changes and finally settled on Inter-Alia meaning “amongst other things” which was appropriate as all the band members had day jobs.
During the late 80’s in Durban, management of the action bars and pubs made the decision to do away with any couvert charge and there was a shift towards smaller stages. Few venues could now afford or accommodate 5 piece bands. Time to downsize!! So in 1987 Jane and Paul after months of preparation and using an MC500 sequencer, signed their first pro gig as a duo at Garfunkels in Durban through a management agency

With their roots firmly entrenched in Rock they played the Durban pro circuit until 1997 and became familiar faces at popular venues like Idlers, Derby’s, Shunters, Thirsty’s etc. They were in fact playing at Easy Beat next door to Magoos when the infamous bomb went off. A night not easy to forget. They developed a following and a reputation for always being “a little different” which still applies today. Paul’s Guitar interpretation of Nessun Dorma is a testament to this.

At the time there was very little opportunity for South African bands to go International due to the sanctions imposed on the country and there was very little interest locally for original music. A decision was taken to be the best cover band they could be while still reflecting their own style. Today their popularity still stems from their choice of repertoire which is now very comprehensive and represents most genres with a mix of light Jazz, power Rock, Country, Rock and Roll and Pop

In 1997 they changed direction venturing into the Supper Theatre market with their shows Girls Luv To Rock, Xmas Without Boney-M, Rock this Country and Natural Women to name a few. These were staged at various theatres, restaurants and corporate events.

From Theme evenings to Action Bars and garden concerts, over the years Inter-Alia has evolved into one of the most versatile acts in Durban. They were invited to play at a Society event in the UK in 2011 and shared the stage with Soul Band Rufus Stone. They have appeared on National TV twice and they also entertained the Southern Sun executives in the Sibaya Theatre for the opening of the international Abba Show. May 2013 they performed at the Royal Show and were invited to perform at Spogweni Music Festival to represent the “classic” musicians of Durban.

Inter-Alia is a class act with sound musicianship which reflects in Paul’s programming of the back tracks, they have a lot of history and loads of stories to tell, some hilarious, some tragic. They have met and made friends with people from 30 odd years ago who still follow the band today.

One thing you can be sure of this classy, professional duo will add value to your pub or event.

Paul Candow

I was born in Shildon, North East England and started playing piano and learned to read music at the age of 8. Influenced by my parents in particular my Dad who played piano and a B flat double bass in a marching band. At the time piano was not considered a cool instrument so I changed to guitar when I was 16. Largely self-taught I played with a variety of bands around the clubs in the UK.

I studied for my Apprenticeship and decided to avoid the Falklands war by coming to South Africa in 1982 which I have since made my home.My influences are Larry Carlton, Steve Vai, Allan Holdsworth and Frank Gambale. I write my own music and have one solo album “Until Now” which was launched in August 2021.I consider myself to be innovative in my solos and like to experiment and mix it up a bit when playing live. I like a nice clean warm sound like the solo on ZZ Top’s “Rough Boy” and use a Boss GT Pro rack mount straight into the desk

I currently have nine guitars but favour my Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster when playing live.

I help my wife Jane out with the vocals to give her a break with songs from Frank Sinatra to Midnight Oil!!

I like to re-build land-rovers in my spare time

In 2019 I had a serious mountain bike accident and was in a coma for 10 days. There was a big question whether I would be able to play guitar again but I am back!!

Jane  Candow

I was born on the Copperbelt in Zambia and had my first musical awakening in 1963 when I heard the Beatles “She Loves you”. According to my Mother I had always loved singing from my high chair to the car, shower and everywhere else. Drove her a little dippy. When I was 15 my Speech and Drama mistress decided I had a voice worth training for opera - but I wanted to do rock music. The school did not believe in such foolishness so my vocal training didn’t come until much later.

I taught myself to play the guitar and upon leaving school got my first paid gig in a coffee bar in Pietermaritzburg for R3.00 and a meal.!!
After hearing far too many comments along the lines of “great voice pity about the guitar” I decided to audition as a front liner for a rock band which was quite a transition from acoustic folk. This is where I met Paul my business and life partner.

I have never been influenced by any particular singer (although I admire many like Annie Lennox and Annie Wilson of Heart) but always by the songs. Over the years I have learnt and developed different techniques to sound like various singers – Stevie Nicks comes to mind as she has a very specific voice.

I do all the marketing and management of the duo and I would love to do stand-up comedy if it wasn’t so terrifying.

Some of my favourite things: Cats, horses, good movies, eating out and supper theatre audiences.
